The Russian Federation has committed to providing significant military support to Nigeria’s Armed Forces as the nation grapples with increasing security challenges. This assurance was given by Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov during a recent visit by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, to the Russian Ministry of Defence in Moscow.

Minister Belousov emphasized that this support would be in line with the existing military-technical cooperation between the two countries. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, stated that the specifics of this military assistance will be determined through future engagements. These discussions will involve the Intergovernmental Working Group and the Nigerian Armed Forces, and are expected to establish the framework for Russia’s operational support.

General Musa’s visit to Russia also served as an opportunity for Nigeria to express solidarity with the Russian Federation during its 80th Victory Day Commemoration, an event honoring the heroes of World War II. Brigadier General Gusau noted that the visit was productive, allowing the CDS to reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening its military ties with Russia and to discuss the specific operational requirements of the Nigerian Armed Forces that Russia could potentially assist with.

In a separate development, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced ongoing aerial display rehearsals in Abuja and Lagos. These exercises are part of the preparations for the NAF’s 61st Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for May 23rd, 2025. The NAF has assured residents of both cities that these rehearsals are being conducted with strict adherence to safety protocols and urged them to continue their daily activities without apprehension.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, explained that the aerial displays are intended to enhance the grand finale of the anniversary celebration and to showcase the Air Force’s operational capabilities and professionalism. The NAF expressed its appreciation to the public for their understanding and cooperation during this period.
