Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced that the National Assembly will take decisive steps to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, emphasizing the restoration of peace and stability in the region. Akpabio made these remarks during the commissioning of the Kugbo Taxi and Bus Terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday.

Akpabio assured that the National Assembly is actively working to address the root causes of the crisis and facilitate reconciliation among key stakeholders. “We are determined to ensure that normalcy returns to Rivers State. The National Assembly will work closely with all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and progress for the people,” he stated.

The political turmoil in Rivers State escalated three months ago when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature for six months. The crisis has been marked by tensions between Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister.

Efforts toward reconciliation have gained momentum, with Fubara recently meeting President Tinubu and Wike to explore pathways to peace. Wike, expressing openness to reconciliation, urged Fubara to engage with other aggrieved stakeholders in the state to resolve the lingering disputes.

The National Assembly’s intervention is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing Rivers State and fostering unity among its political actors, with hopes of restoring governance and advancing the welfare of its citizens.
