Xherdan Shaqiri has returned to Europe to join his former club, Basel.

The 32-year-old winger signed a three-year contract with Basel, where he started out way back in 2001.

The Switzerland international spent the last three seasons in Chicago, having played in the Premier League for Liverpool and Stoke.

Shaqiri has also played for Lyon, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in the past.

“It fills me with pride and I am very happy that I can return to my hometown of FCB (Basel) today,” said Shaqiri.

“I have had a deep connection with the club and the region since I was a child, as a fan and, of course, as a player.”
