In a Leagues Cup final filled with tension, Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez has issued a public apology for his actions following his team’s 3-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders. The incident, which took place at Lumen Field in Seattle on Sunday, involved the Uruguayan forward spitting at a member of the Sounders’ staff.
In a statement posted on his Instagram story on Thursday, the 38-year-old Suarez expressed remorse for his “behavior.” “It was a moment of great tension and frustration, where right after the match things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify the reaction I had,” he wrote. “I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.”
The apology comes after cameras captured Suarez in a heated moment immediately following the final whistle. The veteran forward first confronted 20-year-old Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas, putting him in a headlock. As officials and other players intervened to separate the two, Suarez was filmed appearing to spit at a Seattle staff member.
This incident has added to Suarez’s long history of controversial behavior on the pitch, which includes biting opponents in both international and club play, a racial abuse allegation, and a cynical handball during the 2010 World Cup.
Despite the controversy, Suarez remains focused on his team’s future. He expressed optimism about helping Inter Miami secure a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs, stating, “We know there’s still a lot of the season ahead, and we’re going to work together to achieve the successes that this club and all of its fans deserve.”
Inter Miami also addressed the situation with a statement on X, condemning the actions and promising to work with Leagues Cup and MLS officials to handle the situation appropriately. “These actions do not reflect the values of our sport, and we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch,” the club’s statement read.
