The Super Eagles of Nigeria battled to a 1-1 draw against Russia in a tense international friendly on Friday, maintaining their unbeaten streak under head coach Eric Chelle. The match, played at a neutral venue, was part of both teams’ ongoing preparatory friendlies, with Nigeria aiming to sustain momentum after recent successes.

Nigeria, buoyed by a 2-1 victory over rivals Ghana and a penalty shootout win against Jamaica in the Unity Cup final, showcased resilience despite facing anxious moments.

Russians Take Lead via Own Goal

The encounter began with Nigeria looking sharp in attack. However, the Super Eagles were stunned in the 27th minute when defender Semi Ajayi inadvertently directed a Russian cross into his own net, handing Russia a 1-0 lead. This opening goal, coming against the run of play, momentarily disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm for much of the first half. Despite efforts from the attacking trio of Victor Boniface, Chidera Uche, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, the Russian defense held firm, ensuring Nigeria went into the break trailing.

Arokodare Rises to the Occasion

Eric Chelle’s tactical adjustments in the second half proved crucial. The most impactful substitution came in the 61st minute when striker Tolu Arokodare replaced Boniface. Just ten minutes later, Arokodare rose highest to meet a cross, powering a header past the Russian goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1 in the 71st minute. It was a well-earned equalizer, demonstrating the team’s resilience under pressure.

Late Tensions Flare

The closing minutes saw the match become increasingly scrappy, marked by several substitutions from both sides and rising tensions. Nigerian defender Bruno Onyemaechi received a yellow card in the 55th minute, while Russia’s Daniil Glebov and Aleksei Batrakov also saw cautions in the second half. Despite some late pressure from the hosts, Nigeria held firm, showcasing composure and tactical discipline under Chelle’s guidance to secure the draw.

Unbeaten Streak Continues

This result extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run under Eric Chelle to three matches, following their 2-1 win over Ghana and the Unity Cup victory against Jamaica (after a 0-0 regulation draw). The Super Eagles also successfully retained the Unity Cup trophy, providing a further morale boost as they look ahead to future competitive fixtures.
