Nigeria’s Super Falcons have clinched a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against hosts Morocco. The highly anticipated final saw the Nigerian side overcome a two-goal deficit to secure a historic victory at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium.
The match began with early attacking intent from Justine Madugu’s side, though Morocco’s defense initially held firm. The Atlas Lionesses, spurred on by a fervent home crowd, struck first in the 12th minute with Ghizlane Chebbak converting a long-range effort. Morocco then doubled their lead in the 24th minute through Sanaa Mssoudy, leaving the Super Falcons facing a significant challenge at halftime.
However, Nigeria delivered a commendable second-half performance, demonstrating resilience and determination. The comeback began just four minutes past the hour mark when Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a handball by Nouhaila Benzina. Seven minutes later, the Super Falcons leveled the score when Folashade Ijamilusi slotted into an empty net, brilliantly set up by Okoronkwo.
Nigeria then took control of the game, dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities. Despite a penalty decision initially going against them in the 78th minute, a subsequent VAR review overturned the call, affirming the defender’s hand was in a natural position. The decisive moment arrived with just two minutes remaining when Jennifer Echegini fired in the winner from a perfectly delivered free-kick by Okoronkwo, sealing Nigeria’s “Mission X” and their unprecedented 10th WAFCON title.
During the award ceremony, South Africa received the Fair Play Award. Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the top scorer prize with five goals. Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was honored as the Best Goalkeeper, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament.
This victory further solidifies Nigeria’s dominance in women’s African football, marking a significant milestone in the Super Falcons’ storied history.
