Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over reigning champions South Africa on Tuesday evening at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie secured the crucial win for the nine-time African champions in an action-packed semi-final clash.
The highly anticipated encounter was fueled by the intense rivalry between the two footballing powerhouses and their impressive form throughout the tournament. Despite South Africa’s resilient defense, it was Justine Madugu’s side who broke the deadlock just before half-time. A penalty was awarded to Nigeria after Bambanani Mbane was penalized for a handball in the box. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade calmly stepped up and converted from the spot, giving the Super Falcons a crucial lead. Prior to the breakthrough, Nigeria had controlled possession but were repeatedly thwarted by the exceptional saves of South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
Banyana Banyana, however, drew level on the hour mark. Hildah Magaia was brought down by Osinachi Ohale inside the penalty area, leading to a spot-kick for South Africa. Linda Motlhalo confidently converted the penalty, shifting the pressure back onto the Nigerian side.
Nonetheless, it was the Super Falcons who had the final say, thanks to a stunning strike from Michelle Alozie in the dying moments of the match. The Houston Dash star unleashed a powerful long-range shot that sailed past a helpless Dlamini, securing Nigeria’s spot in the final.
With this victory, Nigeria will now face either Ghana or Morocco in the WAFCON final, scheduled for July 26th in Rabat, as they aim to secure a record-extending 10th African title.
