Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface was notably absent from Tuesday’s training session, with reports from Bild confirming that the Nigerian international is currently sidelined due to illness. While his condition raised early concerns among fans and club officials alike, the latest updates suggest that Boniface is on track to make a full recovery ahead of Leverkusen’s crucial Bundesliga clash against Union Berlin on Saturday.

Though temporarily under the weather, Boniface is expected to rejoin the squad later this week, offering manager Xabi Alonso a timely reinforcement as the club enters a decisive phase in the league title race. The 23-year-old forward has faced a challenging few months marked by injury setbacks and limited playing time, but his quality and impact when fit remain undeniable.

Boniface enjoyed a stellar start to the 2024–2025 Bundesliga campaign, quickly establishing himself as one of Bayer Leverkusen’s most important attacking assets. His physical presence, intelligent movement, and clinical finishing made him a constant threat in front of goal. However, his momentum was disrupted in November when he sustained a hamstring injury while on international duty with Nigeria. The setback forced him to the sidelines during a critical part of the season.

Upon his recovery, Boniface found it difficult to immediately reclaim his place in the starting XI, with Alonso opting for a more settled forward line that had adapted in his absence. His return to full match fitness coincided with the winter transfer window, during which a high-profile move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr was reportedly in the works. The deal, however, ultimately fell through, keeping Boniface at Leverkusen for the remainder of the season.

Despite not being a regular starter since his return in early 2025, Boniface has still managed to contribute significantly when called upon. In ten appearances this calendar year, he has been involved in four goals—netting three times and providing one assist. These contributions underscore his ability to make an impact, even with limited minutes on the pitch.
