The Association of Resident Doctors of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCT) has suspended its indefinite strike, offering a respite for patients in Abuja and its environs. The suspension, announced by ARD-FCT President Dr. George Ebong on Friday, means doctors will return to work on Monday, September 22, 2025.

The decision followed an intervention by the Senate Committee on Federal Territory Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, as well as a show of respect for the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Dr. Ebong noted that while none of the doctors’ demands have been met, the Senate has assured the association that they will address the grievances with the minister.

A History of Unfulfilled Demands
The strike, which began on September 15, paralyzed services across the 14 district and general hospitals under the FCT Administration. This action came after a seven-day warning strike failed to prompt the authorities to address the doctors’ long-standing concerns.

The doctors’ demands include:

Payment of Salary Arrears: Settlement of up to six months of salary arrears for members employed since 2023.

CONMESS Arrears: Payment of outstanding arrears from the 25-35% upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

Staffing and Promotions: Recruitment of more medical staff and a clear timeline for the promotion and conversion of doctors who have qualified as specialists.

Improved Conditions: Provision of adequate equipment and infrastructure, and the correction of erroneous deductions and irregular salary payments.

Dr. Ebong explained that the association’s decision to suspend the strike is an act of good faith. He stated that the welfare of doctors is not just about their personal benefits but directly impacts the quality of healthcare for FCT residents.

The suspension gives both parties a chance for dialogue, as the Senate’s promise to mediate appears to have convinced the doctors to give negotiations another chance.
