Manchester United secured a pivotal 2-1 victory over reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield, ending a nine-year, nine-match winless streak on their rival’s ground. The victory is a significant moment for manager Ruben Amorim, marking his first set of back-to-back Premier League wins, while condemning Liverpool to a concerning fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.

The Red Devils got off to a dream start with Bryan Mbeumo scoring just 62 seconds in. Bruno Fernandes found Amad Diallo on the right, and Diallo’s pass slipped Mbeumo in to finish past Giorgi Mamardashvili. The goal was mired in controversy as Liverpool players protested, believing play should have stopped for a head injury to Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up.

Liverpool dominated possession and created numerous chances, with Cody Gakpo having a famously unlucky afternoon, hitting the woodwork three times throughout the contest.

The momentum appeared to shift when Gakpo finally found the back of the net in the 78th minute, tapping in a cross from substitute Federico Chiesa to level the score and send Anfield into a frenzy.

However, United delivered the decisive blow in the 84th minute. Following a corner, Bruno Fernandes delivered a brilliant, volleyed cross, which was met by a towering header from Harry Maguire to restore United’s lead and secure a monumental victory.

Manchester United’s win propels them up to 9th place on 13 points, moving them just two points behind Liverpool, who drop to 4th place on 15 points (now four points behind leaders Arsenal). For Liverpool, this run of form under Arne Slot, including four straight defeats across all competitions, will put serious pressure on the team’s title defense.
