Raphinha, the dynamic Brazilian winger currently playing for FC Barcelona, once stood at a crossroads that could have dramatically altered his international football career. Before his call-up to the Brazilian national team, he was approached by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) with an offer to represent Italy. Given his Italian heritage through his father and possession of an Italian passport, Raphinha was eligible to play for the Azzurri.

At the time, Raphinha was making waves at Leeds United in the English Premier League. His performances had caught the attention of Italy, which had a history of integrating Brazilian-born players like Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri into their squad.  Despite the opportunity, Raphinha declined the offer. His decision was deeply rooted in his lifelong aspiration to play for Brazil, inspired by his idol and family friend, Ronaldinho Gaúcho.

Raphinha’s patience and commitment to his dream paid off when he received his first call-up to the Brazilian national team in August 2021.  He made a remarkable debut against Venezuela in October 2021, coming on as a substitute and contributing two assists in a 3–1 victory. He continued to impress by scoring his first two international goals in a subsequent match against Uruguay.

Since then, Raphinha has become an integral part of the Seleção, participating in major tournaments like the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América.  His journey underscores the importance of staying true to one’s roots and dreams, even when presented with alternative paths.
