President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The swearing-in ceremony took place at 1:50 pm in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, formally marking the commencement of the legal expert’s tenure as the head of the nation’s electoral body.
This development comes exactly one week after the Senate concluded its rigorous screening and subsequently confirmed Amupitan’s appointment on October 16. During the brief ceremony, President Tinubu charged the new INEC Chairman with the critical responsibility of protecting the sanctity and integrity of Nigeria’s elections and the entire electoral process. Furthermore, the President tasked Professor Amupitan with the duty of strengthening the institutional capacity of the electoral umpire to ensure greater transparency and public trust moving forward. Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently expired.
