Mamelodi Sundowns officially booked their spot in the CAF Champions League group stage on Sunday, completing a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars. The South African powerhouse sealed the job with a comfortable 2-0 win in the second leg at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Despite holding a commanding advantage from their first-leg triumph in Abeokuta, the Brazilians displayed ruthless efficiency, extending their unbeaten run in continental football. Goals from Nuno Santos and star striker Peter Shalulile ensured their seamless progression.

Match Summary

Sundowns wasted little time stamping their authority on the match, immediately employing their trademark passing rhythm and pressing intensity. The pressure paid off handsomely in the 21st minute when Aubrey Modiba executed a high press deep in the visitors’ half to win back possession. His subsequent clever cut-back found Nuno Santos, who calmly slotted the ball home to open the scoring.

The hosts continued to dictate the game, and just before half-time, Modiba turned provider again. He floated in a corner kick that fell perfectly for Peter Shalulile, who steered it beyond the Remo Stars defense to double the lead, making it 2-0 heading into the break.

After the restart, Remo Stars attempted to find a consolation goal. Samson Olasupo came closest for the Nigerian side, first firing into the side netting and later dragging a low shot just wide of the post. However, the scoreline remained unchanged, largely thanks to goalkeeper Obassa Adebiyi, who produced several sharp stops to keep the final deficit respectable.

Context for Nigerian Clubs

The defeat means Remo Stars have now failed to advance beyond the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League in four successive attempts.

With their exit, Rivers United remains Nigeria’s only representative still active in CAF competitions this season, following their 3-2 aggregate win over Black Bulls of Mozambique.
