Rivers United produced an outstanding performance in Uyo on Saturday night, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Mozambique’s Black Bulls to win 3-1, securing a 3-2 aggregate victory and a spot in the CAF Champions League group stage.
The triumph marks a major milestone for Nigerian football, as Rivers United became the first Nigerian Premier League side in six years to reach the group phase of Africa’s biggest club competition. Lobi Stars was the last Nigerian club to achieve this feat in the 2018/19 season.
Dominance and Early Breakthrough
The “Pride of Rivers” knew they had to be aggressive after losing the first leg in Maputo. From kickoff, they pressed high and moved the ball with purpose, keeping the visitors under relentless pressure.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Wasiu Falolu capitalized inside the area and calmly slotted the ball home to level the tie on aggregate, sending the Uyo crowd into a frenzy.
Rivers United maintained their intensity. Just before halftime, Falolu was fouled just outside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Maclyn Biokpo stepped up and made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Finidi George’s side a 2-0 lead on the night and a 2-1 aggregate advantage in the 42nd minute.
Black Bulls Respond, United Fights Back
The visitors returned sharper after the break, and momentum briefly tilted when Moctar Diallo fired past the Rivers’ goalkeeper only two minutes into the second half, drawing the Black Bulls level on aggregate once again.
However, Finidi George made timely changes, bringing on Rivio Ayemwenre and Samson Obi to inject pace and control. The pivotal moment arrived in the 75th minute when Timothy Zachariah, who had troubled the opposition throughout the game, unleashed a brilliant strike from distance that flew into the top corner, restoring Rivers United’s aggregate advantage.
The hosts managed the rest of the game smartly, defending their lead until the final whistle blew, triggering massive celebrations from the players and fans for a memorable comeback.
Rivers United will discover their group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on November 3 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
