The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed that it is putting the final touches on the formation of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, granting its presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the authority to nominate key leadership positions.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the opposition party confirmed that Obi and Kwankwaso have held extensive consultations with the NDC National Leader and the party’s executive leadership to finalize the framework for the campaign organ.

Key Roles and Collaborative Structure

Under the agreed arrangement, the presidential candidates have been given the latitude to appoint suitability-tested individuals into top operational roles, including:
  • Director-General of the Campaign
  • Deputy Director-General (North)
  • Campaign Spokesperson & Deputy Spokesperson
  • Head of New Media
  • Finance Director & Deputy Finance Director
The party explained that this framework strikes a balance between empowering the candidates to assemble a preferred team and ensuring institutional party participation.
To guarantee strict compliance with the Electoral Act and meet financial reporting obligations to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the designated Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director will co-manage campaign funds alongside the NDC National Treasurer.
Fundraising operations will be spearheaded by Obi and Kwankwaso, with all proceeds deposited into a dedicated presidential campaign account overseen by both the candidates’ nominees and the party’s treasury.

Delayed Inauguration and Internal Alignment

The NDC revealed that a comprehensive draft of the campaign structure and a proposed timetable had been prepared since August 2026. However, the official inauguration of the PCC—originally scheduled for the first week of September—was postponed due to the presidential candidate’s international travel commitments.
The announcement comes amidst recent friction involving external support groups, notably following the party’s rejection of an unauthorized 59-member campaign council unveiled independently by the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement.
Addressing candidates and party supporters across all levels, the NDC leadership urged unity and discipline ahead of the 2027 polls:
“We appeal to all our candidates at all levels to restrain their supporters and support groups to focus on the need to win elections. There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC. We are committed as a party. The party has done its own and is ready to do more. The candidates and their supporters are encouraged to do the same.”

The party stated that the formal inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council will take place as soon as input and final nominations are received from Obi and Kwankwaso.
