Robin van Persie’s managerial debut at Feyenoord ended in disappointment as his side were held to a goalless draw by NEC Nijmegen in a home Eredivisie clash on Saturday. The highly anticipated return of the former Dutch international, whose playing career began and concluded at Feyenoord, was met with a warm reception at De Kuip. However, the match failed to deliver the desired result, leaving Feyenoord fourth in the league standings.

Van Persie’s appointment followed the dismissal of Brian Priske last month, and Feyenoord’s acquisition of their former youth team coach, who had recently taken his first head coach job at Heerenveen, underscored the club’s high expectations. Despite the positive atmosphere surrounding his return, the team struggled to break down a resolute NEC Nijmegen defense.

The draw prevented Feyenoord from moving above Utrecht into third place, and it came on the heels of PSV Eindhoven’s defeat to Go Ahead Eagles. This result means that Ajax Amsterdam have the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points if they secure a victory against Almere City on Sunday.

Attention now shifts to Feyenoord’s upcoming Champions League last-16 tie against Inter Milan.

The Dutch side will host the first leg of the crucial encounter on Wednesday, presenting van Persie with an immediate opportunity to make a significant impact in his new role. The pressure will be on the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker to rally his team and secure a positive result against the Italian giants.
