The Premier League has issued a statement defending the Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) decision not to recommend a red card for Everton defender James Tarkowski following his tackle on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister in Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby. The incident, which occurred in the first half just outside the penalty area, sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits.

Referee Samuel Barrot initially showed Tarkowski a yellow card for the challenge, which left Mac Allister in visible pain on the ground. The VAR team subsequently reviewed the incident to determine if it constituted serious foul play warranting a red card. However, after their assessment, they upheld the referee’s original decision.

In a statement released on their Match Centre via social media platform ?, the Premier League explained their reasoning: ā€œThe referee’s decision to issue a yellow card for a reckless foul by Tarkowski was reviewed by VAR, which concluded that while there was contact, it occurred in the follow-through after Tarkowski had played the ball and was categorized as reckless.ā€

Despite the Premier League’s explanation, the decision has been met with criticism from some quarters. Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville offered a scathing assessment of the tackle, describing it as ā€œhorrible.ā€ He further stated, ā€œThere was no need for him to follow through in such a manner.ā€

The incident has ignited a fresh discussion about the consistency of officiating in the Premier League, highlighting the differing interpretations of challenges even with the aid of VAR. While the Premier League stands by the decision, the debate surrounding Tarkowski’s tackle on Mac Allister is likely to continue among players, coaches, and supporters.
