Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly defended goalkeeper Andre Onana following a difficult performance in their 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg. Onana’s errors contributed to Lyon’s goals, raising concerns ahead of crucial upcoming matches.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper was caught off guard by Thiago Almada’s free-kick, which slipped through his grasp, giving Lyon an early lead. Later in the match, Onana spilled a routine save, allowing Rayan Cherki to score a late equalizer, denying United a crucial away victory.

Despite the high-profile errors, Amorim took responsibility, stating, “If you look at the season, Ive made more mistakes than the players during these last months. It happens.” He emphasized that mistakes are a part of the game and shouldn’t solely fall on Onana’s shoulders.

With a crucial Premier League match against Newcastle United looming, and the second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford next week, Amorim urged Onana to refocus. “Andre must concentrate on the next game in the Premier League before we turn our attention to the second leg,” he stated. “When one player makes a mistake, it often reflects on the whole team.”

The manager’s comments suggest an attempt to shield Onana from excessive criticism and maintain team morale during a critical period. The upcoming matches will be a test of Onana’s resilience and ability to bounce back from his errors, with fans and pundits closely watching his performance.
