Yoruba One Voice (YOV), a self-determination group led by the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has vehemently rejected any attempts to introduce Sharia law in the South-West region of Nigeria. The group warned that such a move could destabilize the area and pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s already delicate pluralistic society. �

The YOV’s stance was articulated in a communique issued at the conclusion of their international virtual conference, themed “Sharia Law in Yorubaland: Setting Things Straight through Restructuring.” The conference was presided over by Iba Gani Adams, the Convener of YOV, and brought together members of the YOV Global Coordinating Council, the General Assembly, key stakeholders, and prominent Yoruba indigenes from across the diaspora.

The communique emphasized the group’s firm belief that regional autonomy and comprehensive restructuring remain the most effective pathways to ensuring peaceful coexistence and sustainable development within Nigeria.

Speaking directly at the event, Iba Gani Adams strongly condemned any efforts aimed at implementing Sharia law within Yoruba territory. He described such initiatives as a calculated ploy to “weaponise religion” for narrow political gains.

The Aare Onakakanfo cautioned that these moves could potentially ignite unrest and embolden extremist elements within the South-West region.

“Introducing Sharia law will not improve our economic, political, or cultural fortunes,” Adams asserted. “It could shatter the peace of our land, force our youth into violence, and spark crises similar to what is happening in other parts of the country.”

The virtual conference saw the participation of several notable figures, including Akogun Olakanye Franklin, Iyalode Abike Ade, Chief Mark Oyetunde, Ms Modupe Sodimu, Yeyeluwa Alice Eniola, Yeye Oge Tina Atinuke, Chief Gani Wahab, Prince Adedapo Adesanmi, and Princess Adenike Olotu, among other prominent Yoruba sons and daughters. �

The YOV’s strong rejection of Sharia law in the South-West underscores the growing concerns within the Yoruba community regarding the potential implications for regional stability and Nigeria’s secular fabric. The group remains steadfast in its advocacy for restructuring as the optimal framework for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
