Uzbekistan has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in their history, after securing a crucial 0-0 draw against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. This marks a monumental achievement for the Uzbeks, qualifying at their eighth attempt.

The decisive point was secured thanks to a heroic performance from goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov, who made a trio of vital second-half saves to deny the UAE. While Abbosbek Fayzullaev came close for the visitors with a 54th-minute header that rattled the crossbar, it was Yusupov who ultimately frustrated Cosmin Olaroiu’s Emirati side, who needed a win to keep their automatic qualification hopes alive.

The draw means Uzbekistan progresses from Asian Group A alongside already-qualified Iran. The UAE will now advance to the fourth round of qualifying, as the point earned guarantees them at least a third or fourth-placed finish in Group A.

In related Asian qualifying action, Indonesia also kept their World Cup dreams alive by guaranteeing their involvement in the fourth round. A narrow 1-0 victory over China in Jakarta ended Branko Ivankovic’s side’s qualification hopes. Ole Romeny’s penalty in the 45th minute was the solitary goal that separated the two teams, ensuring Indonesia would finish in either third or fourth place in Group C, thus continuing their journey into the next phase of preliminaries scheduled for October.
