The National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Yabagi Sani, has commended the recent removal of Mele Kyari as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing the move by President Bola Tinubu as “long overdue.â€
President Tinubu recently appointed Bashir Ojulari as the new CEO of NNPCL following Kyari’s exit.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Sani, who is a former staff member of the defunct Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), drew parallels to the earlier removal of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He noted that many Nigerians had applauded Emefiele’s removal due to his perceived deviation from core duties into political affairs.
The ADP chairman stated that a similar expectation had been held for Kyari’s removal, given that the NNPCL was widely regarded as a significant challenge facing the country.
Furthermore, Sani lauded President Tinubu’s administration for the removal of fuel subsidy and the floatation of the naira, describing these policies as “two cankerworms that had eaten deep into the country’s fabric.â€
He emphasized that for the NNPCL to function effectively, its shareholders should be empowered to decide its management, and the company should be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
