The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has refuted allegations that its platform has been hijacked by prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, as a vehicle for the 2027 general elections.
Effiong Nyong, the party’s National Publicity Secretary (South), addressed these claims in an interview with Daily Post on Wednesday. He emphasized that the involvement of these political heavyweights is a patriotic effort to challenge what he described as worsening governance, rather than an attempt to dominate the party.
Nyong, who was the ADC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Cross River State, dismissed the notion of a political takeover. “I think it is very wrong to say that ADC has been hijacked,” he stated. “In the interest of the country, these people, having noticed the drift into destruction and valuing their individual strengths, decided to come together and tame the scourge.”
While acknowledging the right of critics to voice concerns, Nyong cautioned against premature conclusions or politically motivated speculations. “Disgruntled persons are also free to say what they want, it is within their rights. But we must not be stampeded into reacting to every noise,” he added.
According to Nyong, the coalition’s primary objective is to present a united front against what he termed the “capture of Nigeria by self-serving elites.” He asserted, “The objective of the coalition is to rescue ourselves from those who have captured Nigeria with impunity and are boasting about it.”
Nyong also highlighted that 2025 will mark the halfway point of the current administration’s term, offering Nigerians an opportunity to compare their lives before and after the 2023 elections. He criticized Nigeria’s current political leadership, accusing them of prioritizing securing endorsements for 2027 over improving the living conditions of citizens.
