South Korean superstar Son Heung-min has officially completed a landmark transfer to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC, bringing an end to his legendary 10-year career at Tottenham Hotspur. The move reportedly involves a record-breaking transfer fee for the league, with ESPN and The Athletic reporting the sum at $26 million (£18.7m).

At 33 years old, the forward departs Spurs as one of the club’s all-time greats, having amassed 173 goals across 454 appearances. His final act in a Tottenham shirt was a memorable one, as he captained the team to a Europa League triumph at the end of last season, securing the club’s first trophy in 17 years.

Expressing his excitement for the new chapter, Son shared his ambitions for his time in California. “I’m incredibly proud to be joining LAFC, a club with big ambitions in one of the most iconic sports cities in the world,” he said. “I have come to LA to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans.”

The move sees Son reunite with former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris at LAFC, a club currently sixth in the Western Conference.

Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy offered a heartfelt tribute to the departing icon. “Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt and he has been a joy to watch over the past decade,” Levy stated. “Not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he’s also an incredible human being… We wish him all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at the club as a beloved and cherished member of our Spurs family.”
