FC Barcelona has temporarily stripped goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen of the first-team captaincy, initiating disciplinary proceedings against the veteran player in a move that highlights the club’s ongoing struggles with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules. The decision follows a deepening dispute between the club and the German international over his injury status, which has complicated the registration of new signings, including Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford.

The conflict stems from Ter Stegen’s recent surgery to repair a multiple knee ligament tear. While the club needed him to sign a long-term medical leave—which, under LaLiga rules, requires a minimum of four months of recovery to free up 80% of his salary—Ter Stegen publicly announced on social media that he would only be sidelined for three months. This discrepancy directly opposed the club’s efforts to create space on their wage bill and comply with financial regulations.

In an official statement, Barcelona confirmed the decision, stating, “Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, in agreement with the Sports Management and the technical staff, has decided to temporarily remove him as captain of the first team.” The statement added that current vice-captain Ronald Araujo would assume the duties of first captain during this period.

The saga has brought Barcelona’s financial precariousness back into the spotlight. The club recently signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia from local rivals Espanyol and brought in Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, but their ability to register these players is contingent on freeing up salary space. Ter Stegen’s refusal to comply with the long-term injury protocol has created a significant hurdle. Reports also indicate that other players, including Wojciech Szczesny, also remain unregistered as the new season looms.

With their LaLiga title defense set to begin on August 16 at Mallorca, the club now faces a significant captaincy crisis and a race against time to resolve the internal conflict and administrative hurdles. The outcome of the disciplinary proceedings and the eventual resolution of the financial fair play issues will determine the club’s stability both on and off the pitch as the season gets underway.
