Newcastle United recorded a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, securing their 14th away win over Spurs—their highest away victory count against any single opponent. The result leaves Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point or a goal after two Premier League matches.
Anthony Elanga threatened early with a looping cross toward the far post that tested Antonin Kinsky. Tottenham responded through Mathys Tel, who cut inside to force a save from Lukas Hornicek, while Lewis Hall made a last-ditch block to deny Pedro Porro. Porro continued to press forward, volleying just over the crossbar from a corner before Omar Marmoush missed a chance on his Spurs debut following Andrew Robertson’s delivery. Jan Paul van Hecke also tested Hornicek before the interval, but the sides went into half-time level.
Tottenham maintained pressure after the restart, with Malick Thiaw escaping a penalty shout following a challenge on Marmoush before Rodrigo Bentancur attempted a follow-up. Hall responded at the other end with a long-range strike that narrowly missed, while Elanga rounded Kinsky but drifted too far wide to finish.
The deadlock was broken in the 62nd minute through a combination of Newcastle debutants and Elanga. Nico Gonzalez picked out Amar Dedic with a cross-field pass, and Dedic laid the ball off for Elanga. The Swedish international evaded former teammate Sandro Tonali before guiding his shot in off the post.
De Zerbi’s side attempted to respond as Hornicek saved another effort from Porro, but Newcastle doubled their lead ten minutes later when Yoane Wissa converted an acrobatic effort from a corner. A late miss from Marmoush sealed Tottenham’s seventh defeat in their last nine league meetings against the Magpies.
The defeat marks the first time in 15 years that Tottenham Hotspur have lost both of their opening league matches of a campaign.
