President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat to serve as the new Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The announcement was made in a statement on Thursday by President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Engr. Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator who holds a PhD in Strategic Management. He will be joined by two newly nominated commissioners for NERC: Mr. Abubakar Yusuf, Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun, Commissioner of Finance and Management Services.

All three nominations are subject to confirmation by the Senate. To prevent a leadership gap at the regulatory agency, the President has directed Engr. Ramat to assume office in an acting capacity until his Senate screening is complete. President Tinubu has encouraged the new appointees to apply their knowledge and experience to advance the administration’s vision for the power sector.

In a separate development, the Federal Government has taken disciplinary action against several personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). A total of 15 personnel were dismissed and 59 others were demoted for various acts of misconduct and indiscipline.

According to a statement from Umar Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer for the NCoS, these actions follow a comprehensive review by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) under the Ministry of Interior. The board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee investigated 224 cases involving correctional officers nationwide.

The sanctions approved by the board ranged from outright dismissal to written warnings, depending on the severity of each case. In addition to the dismissals and demotions, 42 personnel received written warning letters as a corrective measure for confirmed breaches of professional standards.
