The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has publicly stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is now a major challenge for him in his home state. During a media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike asserted that Rivers State has never experienced the level of federal political appointments that it is currently receiving under the Bola Tinubu administration, making the APC a significant threat to his political influence.

“I have a problem as a member of PDP, you know why? What is going on now, I have never seen the level of empowerment of any state than Rivers State in terms of political appointments. It’s a problem for me as a member of PDP,” Wike said. He added that even as he preaches the gospel of his own party, the people of Rivers State are asking questions and acknowledging the benefits they are seeing from the current federal government. “APC is a threat to me, whether PDP like it or not, they had the opportunity but the only thing that is going for me now is because my people believe and still have that faith in me.”

Wike also used the opportunity to address his actions during the 2023 general elections. He reiterated that he has no regrets about working against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), maintaining that his warnings to the party about its internal zoning conflicts were ignored and eventually came to pass. According to the former Rivers governor, the PDP’s recent decision to zone the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the south is a direct result of their realization of the mistakes made during the 2023 polls, where both the National Chairman and the presidential candidate were from the Northern region.
