In a dramatic turn of events, Aykhan Abbasov’s tenure as interim Azerbaijan manager started with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ukraine in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The result, secured with a late penalty, puts a dent in Ukraine’s hopes of reaching the finals for the first time since 2006.

The match at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium was filled with early drama. A VAR review overturned a penalty awarded to Ukraine just two minutes into the game, setting a tense tone. Despite Ukraine’s dominant possession, Azerbaijan’s defense held firm, and they even came close to scoring from a free kick by Emin Mahmudov, which was brilliantly saved by Anatoliy Trubin.

Ukraine broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half when Heorhiy Sudakov finished off a quick move down the right flank, putting his side in the lead.

Azerbaijan’s lifeline came just past the hour mark. Another VAR review led to a penalty after a handball by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zinchenko. Mahmudov stepped up to the spot and calmly chipped the ball into the net to level the score.

Both teams now have a point from their first two matches, but the draw is a significant sign of progress for Azerbaijan after their 5-0 loss to Iceland in their opening qualifier. For Ukraine, the result raises questions about their defense and their path forward in the qualification campaign.
