Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has called for improved defensive performance from his team ahead of their LaLiga match against Alaves on Sunday. The demand comes after a series of conceding goals, including a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Ancelotti expressed concern over the team’s recent defensive lapses, stating, “Above all in recent weeks there’s been a general dip (among the team). We have let in a lot of goals in recent games and we have to put a stop to that, above all when those up front are not as effective as usual.”
Real Madrid, currently second in LaLiga and chasing leaders Barcelona, have conceded 11 goals in their last four matches across all competitions. Ancelotti emphasized the importance of regaining their winning form against Alaves, despite the looming second leg against Arsenal on Wednesday. “We will try to win because it’s fundamental to get our good feeling back,” he said. “Everyone is thinking about Wednesday but all that depends on our performance tomorrow.”
He acknowledged the team’s poor performance against Arsenal, admitting that statistics showed his players ran less than their opponents. However, he downplayed the significance of this statistic, stating, “In the past we’ve run less and, despite that, we’ve won two Champions Leagues. We can do more (in that regard) but it’s not just about that.”
Addressing speculation about his job security, Ancelotti clarified, “The contract is quite clear and we will talk about the future at the end of the season. The club always supports me, above all in the difficult moments.” His current contract expires in 2026.
Real Madrid aims to secure a victory against Alaves to maintain their pursuit of the LaLiga title and regain momentum ahead of their crucial Champions League second leg.
