Aston Villa has finally found their first competitive win of the season, edging out a stubborn Bologna side with a 1-0 victory in their UEFA Europa League (UEL) league phase debut. The win at Villa Park came with its share of drama and frustration, but it was enough to get the English team’s European campaign off to a perfect start and extend Bologna’s winless streak against English opposition to six matches.
Goals have been a major concern for Villa in the early part of the season, and that trend seemed set to continue in the opening minutes. Forward Evann Guessand had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock but was denied by a sharp save from Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski. However, the hosts’ early pressure eventually paid off. A half-cleared corner fell to the feet of captain John McGinn on the edge of the area, and his low drive found the bottom corner of the net, sending the Villa Park crowd into a frenzy.
While many hoped McGinn’s goal would open the floodgates, Bologna proved to be a difficult opponent, frustrating their hosts with a compact defence. Villa’s Donyell Malen had a shot blocked just moments after the opener, but the single-goal advantage left the door ajar for the Italian side.
Bologna, however, struggled to create clear-cut chances themselves. Federico Bernardeschi, in particular, wasted a significant opportunity when he sliced a shot wide from the edge of the box.
The second half brought more tension. Manager Unai Emery, a specialist in this competition, brought on talismanic striker Ollie Watkins to add a new dimension to the attack. The substitution almost had an immediate impact when Watkins was felled in the area, winning a penalty. Unfortunately for Villa, Watkins’ tame spot-kick was saved by Skorupski.
Just minutes later, Villa’s luck nearly ran out when Santiago Castro’s powerful header rattled the crossbar, leaving the home fans breathless. The nervy final moments saw substitute Jadon Sancho miss a great chance to seal the win, but Villa managed to survive, holding on for a crucial three points.
The victory will be a massive confidence boost for Unai Emery’s side, who have struggled domestically. They will now look to build on this win as they continue their UEL journey and return to domestic action.
