Athletic Club has made a statement start to the new LaLiga season, achieving three consecutive wins for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Betis at the Estadio de La Cartuja. The result was a significant one for the visitors, who ended a seven-game winless away streak against their opponents.

The match began with Athletic Club on the front foot, looking to make an early breakthrough. Left-back Yuri Berchiche tested his range with a long-distance strike that sailed just wide, while star forward Iñaki Williams was denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity by a sharp save from Betis goalkeeper Ãlvaro Valles. However, as the first half progressed, Real Betis found their footing. Pablo García came agonizingly close to scoring before the break, only to see his powerful shot from the edge of the box deflect off a defender and hit the post.

Real Betis carried that momentum into the second half, with the lively Cucho Hernández proving a constant threat. His fierce strikes from distance narrowly missed the target on two occasions. Despite their attacking pressure, Betis found themselves behind against the run of play. Berchiche, who had been a key figure in the first half, whipped in a cross that unfortunately took a decisive deflection off Betis defender Marc Bartra and into his own net.

With the lead secured, the pendulum swung back in Athletic Club’s favor. They looked the more likely side to add to the scoreline, and they did just that to seal the win. Substitute Maroan Sannadi forced a save from Valles, setting the stage for Aitor Paredes to rise above his marker and head home a flicked-on cross, extending the lead to 2-0.

Real Betis managed to pull one back in stoppage time when Cedric Bakambu scored with a header, but it was too little, too late. The final whistle confirmed a crucial win for Athletic Club, which sees them climb to second in the table at this early stage. Betis, meanwhile, drops to eighth after losing their unbeaten start to the season. The late drama was capped off by a strange incident that saw Athletic’s substitute goalkeeper, Alex Padilla, shown a red card from the bench.
