In a swift and decisive response to new tariffs imposed by the United States this week, China has announced its intention to implement additional tariffs of 34 percent on all goods imported from the US. The Ministry of Commerce made the announcement today, Friday, April 4th, stating that the new duties will take effect on April 10th.

This move comes as a direct countermeasure to what Beijing has characterized as an assertive trade policy by US President Donald Trump, who recently introduced similar tariffs on Chinese goods. According to a report in the Financial Times today, these new US tariffs, labeled as “reciprocal,” are expected to push the total tariffs on some Chinese exports to over 60 percent when added to existing levies.

China has strongly condemned the latest US trade measures, labeling them as “a typical unilateral bullying tactic” that “violates international trade regulations and significantly undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests.” The escalating trade dispute between the two economic giants continues to raise concerns about its potential impact on global commerce and supply chains. The imposition of these retaliatory tariffs by China sets the stage for further developments in this ongoing trade conflict.
