The Dangote Refinery is set to undergo a massive expansion that will see its production capacity nearly double from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd. This ambitious project, announced by Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, on Sunday in Lagos, aims to solidify Nigeria’s position as a global leader in refined petroleum products.
Upon completion, the expanded facility will officially become the world’s largest refinery, surpassing the current titleholder, the Jamnagar Refinery in India.
Confidence in Nigeria’s Energy Future
Speaking at a press conference, Dangote framed the decision as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economic trajectory and a direct alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the country’s energy future.
“We are more than doubling the barrels… to 1.4 million from 650,000,” Dangote stated. “This expansion is about confidence in Nigeria, in Africa, and in our capacity to shape our own energy future.”
The expansion is projected to be a major job creator, estimated to generate around 65,000 jobs during the construction phase alone, while simultaneously opening up new opportunities for local industries.
Commendation for Government Policies
Dangote used the occasion to commend the Federal Government for implementing what he described as supportive policies that have successfully spurred industrial growth in the downstream sector. He specifically highlighted several key initiatives:

He noted that these policy decisions have encouraged private investment in local refining and helped resolve recent, minor disruptions at the facility linked to union activities and sabotage attempts.
Beyond Crude Oil: Boosting Petrochemicals
The expansion is not limited to crude refining. The project will also significantly boost the production of petrochemicals, increasing polypropylene production from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum. Additionally, the facility will increase the output of base oils and linear alkylbenzene, a crucial ingredient used in the manufacturing of detergents.
Assurance on Festive Fuel Supply
Crucially, Dangote offered a firm assurance to Nigerians regarding fuel supply during the upcoming year-end festive period. Despite recent fluctuations in global oil prices, he confirmed that the refinery is fully prepared to maintain a consistent product flow and stable prices.
“For the first time in many years, Nigerians can look forward to a festive season free of fuel anxiety,” he concluded.
