Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and key political stakeholders have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move, confirmed by Governor Oborevwori’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, follows weeks of speculation. Ahon stated that the governor’s decision was the result of “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.”

The defection was announced after a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.

Senator Ebiowou Manager and Delta Commissioner of Information, Aniagwu Charles, addressed a press briefing to confirm the development. Charles explained that the decision was necessary to “cement the development in our state, to build the bond of love that has existed in our state, to further advance the course of security and welfare of our people, and to a very large extent, ensure that development in Delta, because every politician is local, is not truncated.”

Charles further stated, “And in taking that decision, we came to the inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very, very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kiths and kins and build that state that every Deltan can be proud of. We believe that what is happening at the state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose states have changed and there was a need for us to change the drinking pattern. And that is why this decision has been taken unanimously by leaders and stakeholders of the party.”

Charles added that a formal declaration of the defection would be made on Monday of the following week.
