The evolution of contemporary African fashion continues to be shaped by designers who honour tradition while creating garments that resonate with global audiences. Among this new generation is David Onyeodime, a fashion innovator whose work demonstrates that cultural heritage and modern luxury can exist in perfect harmony.
As the Founder and Creative Director of Onyeodime Atelier, David has established a fashion house dedicated to bespoke menswear and womenswear that celebrates the richness of Nigerian craftsmanship. Since launching the brand in 2021, Onyeodime Atelier has become recognised for combining indigenous textile artistry with contemporary tailoring, creating garments that are both culturally authentic and commercially relevant.
Unlike many designers who enter the industry through formal fashion schools, David’s education was built through Nigeria’s centuries-old apprenticeship tradition. He immersed himself in some of the country’s most respected fashion ateliers, learning directly from experienced masters whose knowledge has been passed from one generation to another.
His professional development includes specialised apprenticeship under renowned designer Michael Ogunbiyi, where he mastered advanced pattern cutting, draping, garment construction, and luxury finishing techniques. During this period, he also participated in preparing collections showcased at Lagos Fashion Week while gaining practical experience producing bespoke garments for private clientele.
David further expanded his technical expertise through extensive textile training at Nike Art Gallery, Lagos, where he studied the historic Adire resist-dyeing tradition. Working alongside experienced textile artisans, he developed a deep understanding of natural dye extraction, symbolic pattern development, and handcrafted textile production. His textile samples became part of the gallery’s archive, reflecting the quality of his craftsmanship.
Recognising that authentic luxury begins with exceptional materials, he later travelled to Iseyin in Oyo State to train with an Aso-Oke weaving cooperative. There he immersed himself in the traditional narrow-loom weaving process, learning indigenous techniques that continue to influence many of the fabrics incorporated into Onyeodime Atelier collections.
Beyond technical excellence, David has consistently demonstrated creative originality. His selection for the ARISE Magazine Fashion Week Emerging Designer Showcase in 2018 introduced his work to a wider professional audience and highlighted his ability to reinterpret traditional Nigerian craftsmanship for contemporary fashion markets.
This recognition was followed by the City People Fashion Awards Emerging Designer of the Year honour in 2019, celebrating his creativity, innovation, and contribution to fashion craftsmanship.
Alongside his fashion career, David has pursued academic development through a Merit Master’s degree in International Relations from Teesside University and is currently studying for an OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management at the London College of Professional Studies. This multidisciplinary background strengthens his leadership, communication, and strategic thinking as he expands his fashion enterprise internationally.
