The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) have recently intensified their collaborative efforts to enhance safer migration practices and bolster diaspora engagement. This renewed partnership underscores a shared commitment to leveraging the Nigerian diaspora’s potential for national development while addressing the challenges associated with irregular migration.

In a strategic meeting held in Abuja, NiDCOM Chairperson Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa and IOM’s Acting Chief of Mission, Paola Pace, reaffirmed their dedication to a productive partnership. This collaboration aims to harness the Nigerian diaspora’s contributions across various sectors and to implement initiatives that promote safe and orderly migration.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Reviewing and Implementing Nigeria’s Diaspora Policy: Both organizations are committed to revisiting the National Diaspora Policy to ensure its relevance and effectiveness in engaging the diaspora for national development.

  • Capacity Building: Enhancing the skills and efficiency of NiDCOM staff through training and study tours to better manage diaspora affairs.

  • Joint Sensitization Campaigns: Conducting awareness programs to educate potential migrants on the risks of irregular migration and the benefits of legal migration pathways.

  • Engaging State Governors: Collaborating with Nigerian Governors through stakeholder meetings to strengthen migration management at the state level.

A significant aspect of the partnership is the reintroduction of the short-term return program, designed to leverage diaspora expertise for national development. This initiative encourages Nigerian professionals abroad to contribute their skills temporarily, fostering “brain circulation” rather than brain drain.

Additionally, IOM and NiDCOM are working closely with the Ministry of Labour and international stakeholders to establish smoother pathways for labour mobility. This includes creating opportunities for Nigerians to work abroad legally and safely, thereby reducing the allure of irregular migration routes

Recognizing the psychological challenges faced by migrants and returnees, the partnership emphasizes the importance of mental health rehabilitation and support services. IOM is actively working to provide these services, ensuring that migrants receive the necessary care to reintegrate successfully into society.

The strengthened alliance between IOM and NiDCOM signifies a proactive approach to migration management and diaspora engagement. By addressing the root causes of irregular migration and creating avenues for diaspora contributions, Nigeria aims to harness the full potential of its citizens, both at home and abroad, for sustainable national development.

As both organizations continue to collaborate, the focus remains on implementing policies and programs that facilitate safe migration, empower the diaspora community, and contribute to the nation’s socio-economic growth.
