La Liga has raised serious concerns over FC Barcelona’s financial ability to register star players Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, claiming the club lacks the necessary salary cap space to accommodate their contracts. The escalating dispute comes as Spain’s sports ministry, the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), prepares to rule this week on whether the duo can continue playing for Barcelona for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.

The controversy centers on a €100 million financial arrangement that enabled the CSD to grant temporary registrations for Olmo and Víctor in January. La Liga has openly challenged the legitimacy of this deal, expressing dissatisfaction with what it describes as questionable financial practices by the Catalan club. In a statement released on Wednesday, the league asserted that Barcelona did not have the fiscal capacity to register the players as of December 31, 2024, nor does it as of January 3, 2025, and beyond.

Adding fuel to the fire, La Liga has threatened to pursue action against an anonymous auditor hired by Barcelona to validate the sale of VIP seats at the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou—a key revenue stream for the club. Recent revelations show that this significant transaction was conspicuously absent from the financial documents submitted to La Liga last week for the current season. These accounts, which were reviewed and approved by an alternate auditor, have sparked further scrutiny over the transparency of Barcelona’s financial reporting.

In a further blow to the club, La Liga has formally notified FC Barcelona of a reduction in its spending limit, previously set at €463 million in February. This adjustment could severely impact the club’s operations, including its ability to register players and maintain competitiveness in the league.

The ongoing financial saga has cast a shadow over Barcelona’s season, with La Liga’s statement underscoring broader doubts about the club’s economic stability. As the CSD’s ruling looms, the outcome will determine whether Olmo and Víctor can continue to don the Blaugrana jersey, while the league’s actions signal a tightening grip on Barcelona’s fiscal maneuvers.
