Bayern Munich delivered a resounding 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their all-German UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, marking their first win against Xabi Alonso’s side since the Spaniard took charge of Die Werkself. A clinical display at the Allianz Arena, fueled by goals from Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, has given Bayern a commanding advantage heading into next week’s second leg.

This was a stark contrast to the teams’ lackluster 0-0 Bundesliga stalemate just weeks ago. Bayern came out with renewed vigor, and it took just nine minutes for them to break the deadlock. Michael Olise’s pinpoint cross from the right found Kane, who outmuscled Nordi Mukiele to fire home his first goal in five matches, ending his longest drought since joining Bayern. Leverkusen nearly hit back when Dayot Upamecano’s careless giveaway handed Jeremie Frimpong a golden chance, but Manuel Neuer stood firm to deny the makeshift forward one-on-one.

That miss proved costly as Bayern unleashed a relentless onslaught. Musiala rattled the crossbar with a point-blank header from a corner, while Kingsley Coman and Joshua Kimmich tested Matej Kovar with long-range strikes that veered just wide. Leverkusen clung on desperately, with tensions boiling over before halftime, but they reached the break trailing by only one—a minor miracle given Bayern’s dominance.

The second half brought no respite for Alonso’s men. Less than ten minutes after the restart, Kimmich’s lofted ball seemed destined for Kovar’s gloves, but the Leverkusen goalkeeper misjudged it disastrously, gifting Musiala a simple tap-in. The visitors’ woes deepened when Mukiele, already shaky, received a second yellow card for a clumsy foul on Coman, reducing Leverkusen to ten men. Minutes later, Edmond Tapsoba compounded their misery by dragging Kane down in the box, conceding a penalty. The England captain dusted himself off and rifled the spot-kick into the top corner, notching his 17th Champions League goal since moving to Munich—more than any other player in that span.

With the score at 3-0 and a man down, Leverkusen retreated into damage-limitation mode, focusing on keeping the deficit manageable rather than mounting a comeback. Bayern, now boasting a ten-match unbeaten streak, controlled the closing stages with ease, leaving their rivals with a mountain to climb in the return leg.

For Leverkusen, the night exposed glaring personnel missteps from Alonso, particularly in defense, where Mukiele and Tapsoba struggled. They’ll need a drastic turnaround—and perhaps a repeat of their 3-0 league win at the BayArena a year ago—to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Bayern, meanwhile, will head into the second leg brimming with confidence, their emphatic performance signaling a return to form at the perfect time.

This tie is far from over, but Bayern’s blend of attacking flair and defensive solidity has firmly put them in the driver’s seat. Leverkusen, once invincible under Alonso, now face a daunting task to salvage their European campaign.
