Veteran Nollywood icon Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, widely known as Olu Jacobs, has passed away at the age of 84.
The passing of the legendary actor was confirmed in an official statement released by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on behalf of the family.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” his son shared. The family also appealed to the public, content creators, and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn their loss.
A Pioneering Career Across Continents
Born in 1942, Jacobs enjoyed a distinguished career spanning over five decades. He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and made early television and film appearances in the United Kingdom, including roles in British classics such as The Goodies and The Professionals.
Upon returning to Nigeria in the 1980s, Jacobs became a foundational pillar in shaping the modern Nigerian film industry. He earned widespread acclaim for his commanding stage presence, distinct voice, and regal portrayals of authority figures, monarchs, and patriarchal leads across hundreds of Nollywood productions.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Jacobs was conferred with the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. He was also honored with the prestigious Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Final Years and Lasting Legacy
In 2021, his wife of nearly four decades, veteran actress Joke Silva, revealed that Jacobs was battling Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), a progressive neurodegenerative condition.
Alongside his acting legacy, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, a media and performing arts organization that has mentored and groomed several generations of creative talents within the African entertainment ecosystem.
He is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children, and extended family members.
