Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli has voiced strong criticism of Brentford captain Christian Norgaard, claiming the midfielder’s first-half tackle in their Premier League clash could have resulted in a serious leg injury. Martinelli believes Norgaard should have been shown a red card for the “nasty” challenge.

The incident, which occurred in the 28th minute at the Emirates Stadium, saw Norgaard bring down Martinelli, halting an Arsenal counter-attack. Referee Simon Hooper issued a yellow card, and VAR opted not to intervene, a decision that sparked outrage from Arsenal fans and manager Mikel Arteta.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw, Martinelli expressed his concern: “I didn’t see that again but in the moment, if my foot was on the floor, he could break my leg. He (Norgaard) said he didn’t mean it. I believe him but still he could have broke my leg. For me it was red. I need to see it again to be sure. But for me it was nasty.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was visibly furious on the touchline following the tackle, later stating, “I think my reaction tells everything.” In contrast, Brentford manager Thomas Frank defended his player, saying, “That’s his opinion. I thought it was a strong yellow.”

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Yoane Wissa canceling out Thomas Partey’s opener. The controversial tackle, however, remains a talking point, fueling debate about the severity of the challenge and the consistency of VAR decisions.
