In a bittersweet night for Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar reached a historic milestone of 900 career goals, but Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign came to an end with a 1-1 aggregate defeat to Nashville SC.

Messi’s landmark goal came in the 7th minute of the Round of 16 match, as he scored a trademark low-driven left-footed strike to give Inter Miami a 1-0 lead. The goal was his 900th in professional football, achieved in his 1,142nd official appearance. This feat makes him only the second male player in history to reach this milestone, surpassing the mark faster than his rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, Inter Miami’s joy was short-lived as Nashville SC equalized in the 74th minute through Cristian Espinoza. The visitors’ persistence paid off, and they advanced to the quarter-finals on the away goals rule, ending Inter Miami’s hopes of securing continental glory this season.

Despite Messi’s impressive achievement, Inter Miami was unable to build on their early lead, with Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake making several crucial saves to prevent the hosts from extending their advantage. The tie ultimately ended 1-1 on aggregate, with Nashville progressing to the next round.

Messi’s 900 goals are distributed across 672 for Barcelona, 115 for Argentina, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, and 81 for Inter Miami. The achievement has cemented his legendary status in the football world, with many hailing him as the greatest of all time.

The result marks a disappointing exit for Inter Miami, who were seeking to add the CONCACAF Champions Cup to their MLS Cup title. The team will now focus on their domestic campaign, while Messi will look to continue adding to his impressive goal tally.
