The final of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup is set for a historic clash as six-time champions Argentina prepare to take on Morocco, who become only the third African nation ever to reach the tournament’s decider. Both teams sealed hard-fought victories in their semi-final matches, setting up a monumental final showdown on Monday, October 20.
Morocco’s Penalty Thriller Against France
Morocco secured their place in the final through a nail-biting encounter with France at the Elías Figueroa Brande Stadium in Valparaíso. The match ended 1-1 after 120 tense minutes, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout.
The Moroccans took the lead in the 32nd minute after Yassir Zabiri’s penalty deflected into the net off French defender Lisandru Olmeta, resulting in an unfortunate own goal. France’s response came in the 59th minute, with Lucas Michal scoring from close range to level the game.
Drama intensified in extra time when France were reduced to 10 men following a second yellow card for Rabby Nzingoula. The biggest tactical gamble came just before the final whistle when Morocco’s coach brought on third-choice goalkeeper Abdelhakim El Mesbahi purely for the shootout. The gamble paid off, as Morocco held their nerve, converting all six of their spot-kicks—scored by Younes El Bahraoui, Ilias Boumassaoudi, Yassir Zabiri, Mohamed Hamony, Saad El Haddad, and Byar—to win the shootout 6-5.
Argentina Edges Past Colombia
In the other semi-final held at the Estadio Nacional de Santiago, pre-tournament favorites Argentina managed a tight 1-0 victory over fellow South American rivals, Colombia.
The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Mateo Silvetti found the back of the net, assisted by a superb pass from Gianluca Prestianni. Much like the first semi-final, the losing side was also reduced to 10 men, ending Colombia’s hopes of a late comeback.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Argentina, historically the most successful nation in this tournament, will be aiming to extend their record by claiming a seventh FIFA U-20 World Cup trophy. Morocco, meanwhile, is fighting for their first, a goal that would place them in an elite club alongside previous African finalists Ghana and Nigeria.
Before the final, France and Colombia will contest the third-place play-off scheduled for Saturday, October 18.
