The Netherlands secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Lithuania in a FIFA World Cup qualifier, a performance that left manager Ronald Koeman visibly displeased despite the win. The match was highlighted by two goals from Memphis Depay, who became the all-time top scorer for the Netherlands.

Koeman had made five changes to his team following a recent draw, and the changes seemed to pay off early on. Memphis Depay opened the scoring in the ninth minute, acrobatically putting the ball in the net to reach his 51st international goal and surpass Robin van Persie’s record. The Dutch doubled their lead in the 33rd minute with Quinten Timber scoring his first international goal.

A Disappointing Comeback

The two-goal lead was short-lived as the Netherlands’ defensive struggles allowed Lithuania back into the game. Gvidas Gineitis scored with a powerful shot in the 36th minute, and just before halftime, Edvinas Girdvainis headed in a perfect cross to level the score at 2-2. The home side, ranked 143rd in the world, had managed to surprise the Dutch with their quick comeback.

In the second half, the Netherlands continued to struggle, with Lithuania creating the first chance. However, Depay once again stepped up, heading in a Denzel Dumfries cross in the 64th minute to secure the win for the Dutch.

Despite the victory, the performance was a concern for the Netherlands, who were expected to dominate the match. The win places them at the top of Group G with a three-point lead over Poland and Finland. Lithuania remains in fourth place in the group. The Netherlands will look to improve their performance in their next matches against Malta and Finland in October.
