## Newcastle United Appoint Matthias Jaissle as Head Coach Following Eddie Howe’s Exit
Newcastle United have officially announced the appointment of 38-year-old German tactician **Matthias Jaissle** as their new head coach following the departure of Eddie Howe.
Jaissle arrives on Tyneside after a highly successful spell with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli. Although this marks his first managerial role in one of Europe’s top five leagues, his rapidly growing reputation across international football made him the club’s top target.
Reacting to the announcement, Jaissle expressed his enthusiasm for taking charge at St. James’ Park, calling it a defining milestone in his coaching career.

Jaissle’s path into management came early after a severe injury ended his playing career at just 25. He made an immediate impression at Austrian side Liefering before stepping up to Red Bull Salzburg in 2021. In Austria, he secured back-to-back domestic league titles and an Austrian Cup. He then moved to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli in 2023, where he further enhanced his credentials by guiding the team to consecutive AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026.
He steps into the Newcastle hotseat at a delicate moment for the club. Former manager Eddie Howe spent nearly five years at the helm, transforming the Magpies into Champions League qualifiers and leading them to their first major domestic trophy since 1969 with a League Cup final win over Liverpool in March 2025. However, a difficult 2025/26 campaign plagued by transfer distractions ended in a 12th-place Premier League finish and a heavy 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16.
With key departures already finalized this summer—including Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Barcelona—Jaissle faces an immediate restructuring project as he prepares Newcastle for the upcoming domestic and European challenge.
