The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦110 million to the families of 22 Kano athletes who tragically lost their lives in an accident earlier this year. Each bereaved family received ₦5 million under a Victim Support Fund initiative.

This donation was announced in a statement by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to the Kano State Governor. According to the statement, the First Lady’s contribution was a “profound demonstration of compassion, leadership, and shared humanity.”

In addition to the First Lady’s support, the Kano State Government announced a further ₦130 million relief package. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf stated that each bereaved family would also receive an additional ₦5 million, while each of the 10 injured athletes would get ₦2 million and a plot of land.

This marks the second round of support from the state, as Dawakin Tofa noted that ₦22 million was disbursed immediately after the incident. This initial relief provided ₦1 million to each family of the deceased and ₦500,000 to each injured athlete.

The total financial support for the victims and their families has now reached ₦321.2 million. Other significant contributions include:

₦32 million from the Ogun State Government

₦20 million from the Jigawa State Government

₦2.2 million from private donor Engineer Sagir Koki

In total, the financial support, along with 30 bags of rice and several housing plots, has been supervised and disbursed by the Kano State Accountant General during a formal presentation ceremony.
