NNPP Denies Kwankwaso Defection, Cites Openness to Coalition

The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially debunked recent reports speculating that its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an interview with Arise Television, NNPP National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, clarified that Kwankwaso’s recent comments were misinterpreted. According to Ahmed, the former Kano State Governor has not indicated any intention to leave the party. Instead, he was merely outlining one of the NNPP’s long-standing strategic options, which includes the possibility of a coalition with other political parties.

“I don’t think what he said indicated in any way that he is defecting or about to defect,” Ahmed stated. “NNPP has a long-standing position that we have options. One of the options is to go into a coalition with any other party that has the same philosophy and objective that we have and join them.”

Ahmed explained that Kwankwaso’s statement about giving the APC attention was conditional. He noted that such a move would only be considered if the APC provides a “concrete guarantee” that the interests of NNPP members would be fully taken care of, and not just his own.

The National Chairman reiterated that the NNPP is not looking for a solo approach to the next election cycle and remains open to partnerships that align with its goals, putting an end to the swirling rumors of a defection.
