Martin Ødegaard’s second-half strike proved to be the difference between last season’s UEFA Champions League finalists Arsenal and a resilient Napoli side at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The 1-0 victory marks a fourth clean-sheet win from the last five head-to-head encounters against the Italian club for Mikel Arteta’s men.
In an opening half that the English side shaded without truly dominating, early opportunities remained speculative. Bukayo Saka’s overhead kick was stylish yet ineffective and proved comfortable for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret. At the other end, long-range efforts from Kevin De Bruyne and Matteo Politano went straight into the arms of David Raya. The best opening of the first half fell to Mikel Merino, whose close-range header from Eberechi Eze’s flick was smartly tipped over the bar by Meret.
Napoli’s defensive organization frustrated the visitors as the match wore on. Arsenal almost found a break when Piero Hincapié’s miscued cross drifted goalward, but Meret scampered back to keep the hosts level. Having been central to Napoli’s first-half resistance, Meret was forced off at halftime due to injury, with Vanja Milinković-Savić introduced in goal.
After surviving another early second-half scare when Hincapié blasted over from close range, the Partenopei continued to stifle Arsenal despite giving up significant ball possession.
The decisive moment came in the 75th minute. Following sharp interplay around the box involving substitute Christos Tzolis, Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard found space and fizzed a strike into the far corner off the post. The midfielder’s fourth goal in five appearances ensured the Gunners maintained their 100% winning start to the campaign. Napoli were unable to stage a late response, leaving new manager Max Allegri under early pressure after a third consecutive defeat.
