Former Super Eagles captain and midfield maestro, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has openly expressed his lingering disappointment at never being crowned the African Player of the Year during his illustrious career. In a candid interview with Oma Sports TV, the technically gifted playmaker, who captivated fans with his dazzling skills for Nigeria from 1993 to 2006, stated that he felt he deserved the prestigious individual honour.

Okocha was an integral part of Nigeria’s golden era, leading the Super Eagles to victory in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and featuring prominently in their debut World Cup appearance that same year. With 75 international caps and 15 goals to his name, “Jay Jay†also enjoyed a successful club career across Europe, leaving his mark in Germany, Turkey, France, and England.

Despite his undeniable talent and numerous accolades, the African Player of the Year Award eluded him. Okocha reflected on several near misses, most notably in 1998 when he finished second to Morocco’s Mustapha Hadji. He also secured third place in both 2002, behind Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba, and again in 2004, a year he was remarkably named the best player at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

“At some point, I thought I did enough to have won it,†Okocha admitted. “But at the end of the day, life doesn’t always go as planned; you can’t have it all.â€

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers star didn’t mince words when assessing the winners from his era. “If you look at the winners from my time, I would agree that it was unfair,†he asserted, highlighting the perceived injustice of him never receiving the coveted award.

However, despite the absence of this particular trophy in his collection, Okocha finds immense satisfaction in the lasting impact he had on fans worldwide. “The most important thing for me is to be remembered for my identity,†he emphasized. “I may not have a cabinet full of trophies, but I’ve won the hearts of many, and for me, that is invaluable.â€

Okocha’s legacy as one of Africa’s most gifted and entertaining footballers remains firmly intact, his influence transcending individual awards and solidifying his place as a true legend of the game.
