The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has threatened to sue the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a midnight raid on its premises. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, saw EFCC operatives arrest 93 youths during a party at the facility.
According to a statement from Vitalis Ortese, the Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, over 50 armed men “purporting to be from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)” stormed the premises around 2 a.m. during a “Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza” party. The statement claimed the men were “shooting guns, threatening to kill people” and caused “serious panic and chaos,” leading to injuries among attendees.
The OOPL management has described the operation as a “Gestapo-like invasion of private property” and a “stark and blatant violation of the rights” of those present. Ortese noted that police officers stationed at the library and additional officers from a local station were not informed of the raid, and no warrant was presented by the EFCC team.
In a post on its official X account, the EFCC stated that the raid was based on “credible intelligence” alleging that the youths were involved in internet-related crimes. During the operation, operatives reportedly seized 18 vehicles and numerous mobile devices.
The OOPL has demanded an explanation and an apology from the EFCC, threatening to “seek redress and sanctions as appropriate” if the anti-graft agency fails to respond. The statement concluded by requesting privacy for those involved as an investigation into the invasion continues.
