President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea has appointed Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua as the new prime minister of the country.
This announcement comes barely a month following the resignation of the previous administration, which was deemed “ineffective.”
At the end of July, Manuela Roka Botey’s government, notable for being the first to have a female prime minister, resigned at the president’s request, just 18 months after her appointment.
In his acceptance of the resignation last month, the president remarked on the evident “collective inability to provide effective solutions to critical issues such as the economy, social cohesion, and the fight against corruption.”
In a decree signed on Friday by Obiang and made public by the presidency, Nsua, a former bank executive, was appointed as prime minister, with the responsibility of overseeing the administrative coordination of Equatorial Guinea.
The newly appointed prime minister has served as the director of the National Bank of Equatorial Guinea since 2012.
President Obiang, who is 82 years old, has governed the small African nation, a former Spanish colony abundant in oil resources, for 44 years.
The United Nations and various non-governmental organizations often criticize the repression of dissent in Equatorial Guinea.
